Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
