Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
