EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

In other legal developments:

  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
