Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
